Retro Retail

When I was young I sold all my Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis stuff. I remember my Dad told me that I shouldn't have and that one day I would regret it. At the time I thought he was crazy, because "I would never want to play those old games again," I thought. Fast forward fifteen years, I'm standing in a Disc Replay deciding whether or not to buy a model 2 Sega Genesis. It was the first time that I had even been in a Disc Replay. I never realized that they had so many of my childhood memories sitting on their shelves. After buying that Genesis and a few games I knew that I had to find more gaming stuff from the  past.

Located at 5 Countryside Plaza in Countryside, IL Disc Replay sits just to the right of Best Buy. The store is a decent size and is nicely organized. They have a large selection of retro games, many boxed, and a variety of retro consoles. The prices are right inline with what a retail store charges for retro games. I can usually find something cool whenever I go and not feel like I spent too much. The most expensive retro games in the store are locked up in a glass display case. Some of the games in this case are common but in higher demand and the others are just very rare.

Disc Replay has a ton of retro game stuff and is worth a stop by if you happen to be in the area.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Strider

This weekend I'll be playing Strider for the Sega Genesis. My only experience with this character is from the Marvel Vs. Capcom series and I would rarely play as him due to the fact that I didn't know who hell he was. I picked up my copy in a lot of Genesis games off of Craigslists. I haven't had the time to try it out so it has been sitting on my shelf ever since. Figured it would be the perfect game for a Weekend Retro Game Challenge.

Will I stride through Strider with easy or will I stumble?

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Sonic The Hedgehog COMPLETED!

What can I say about Sonic The Hedgehog? Well, I beat it. It's kind of nice to say after all of these years. While Sonic The Hedgehog isn't the hardest game, it can surprise you if you rush through it to fast. I mean Sonic is all about speed right? For me I would say yes and no. Most of the time I found myself going through Zones at more of a jog than a sprint. Boss fights are pretty easy and didn't cause me any headaches. Sonic The Hedgehog is a classic from the 16-BIT era and  now it's a win for my Weekend Retro Game Challenge.

New Retro : Black Kids

New Retro is something that has been made to look retro but is not. The band is called Black Kids The video has an awesome retro look to it and barrows lots of things from 80's cartoons. I know I saw some Tundercats and Silver Hawks references. Check it out.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Sonic The Hedgehog

I don't think I know anyone that hasn't played a Sonic The Hedgehog game before. Well except for my Mom. I know she has diffidently never played a Sonic game before, but that is besides the point. What I'm trying to say is Sonic The Hedgehog was a huge franchise back in the 16-BIT era and still kind of is to this day. With all that being said I don't think that I have ever actually played Sonic The Hedgehog from start to finish before. Time to rectify that fact. So this Weekend Retro Game Challenge is Sonic The Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis.

It Came From Craigslist

I spotted this collection of Sega swag on Craigslist about a month ago.  The seller was kind high on the price and wasn't willing to budge on it. So I figured if it's meant to be it will still be around in a couple of weeks. Maybe by that time the seller would realize that they had over priced the collection. It's always interesting to me to see people try to get rich off of old video games, because they think that all retro games are extremely rare and that some millionaire geek is pining for a boxed copy of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Anyway I was able to bring them down on the price and seal the deal. Just about everything has a box and a manual. The games are in great shape. I'm looking forward to checking out the Power Base.

Arcade Action

For Father's Day we took a trip out to an Arcade in Northbrook, IL called Nicklecity. We went at the perfect time because the place was pretty empty. Also the cool thing about this Arcade is all the games take nickles instead of quarters or tokens (which are usually the same as quarters anyway). Which is great cause newer games take up to four nickles. That's only 20 cents for you kids who suck at math. Hands down the best part was that many of their classic games are set for free play. I could easily spend all day there and still not play everything. Check it out if you are in the area :

Retro Finds

Found two new NES games at Half Priced Books today to add to the collection.
The Goonies 2 and Robocop

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Keith Courage in Alpha Zones COMPLETED!

So I did it. I was able to complete this Weekend Retro Game Challenge to beat Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for the TurboGrafx. It's nice to have a check mark in the win column after being disgraced last weekend by Ninja Gaiden. I would have to say though I thought this game was not very difficult at all. I pretty much walked through the game. It really wasn't until I reached the final under world zone that I felt any real difficultly.
In Keith Courage you have two parts to a zone, the upper and the lower. The upper part of the zones are comprised of many little enemies that you have to destroy in order to receive gold that you can use to buy items to aid in Keith's quest. The lower zone is much cooler than the upper. Keith jumps into a bad ass little mech suit to cut down any BAD Dudes that get in his way. The game play is a lot faster in the lower zones which is why I liked it much better than the upper ones. The bosses were also a cake walk and didn't take much effort to defeat them. The last boss was the only one who gave me trouble, but in the end I was able to put him down.
Keith Courage in Alpha Zones was a fast play through and I would say it was fun to kill some time with.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Keith Courage in Alpha Zones

This weekend I'll be playing the only game I actually own for the TurgoGrafx, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. I picked this game up a few months back at a Flea Market for $5 and haven't taken the time yet to sit down and play it. So I thought it would be the perfect choice for my Retro Game Challenge.

Never owned a TurboGrafx when I was young and to be honest I had never heard of the system until I started to get into retro games. Believe me when I say that it was an incredible surprised when I found the system in a drawer at my Mother-In-Law's house. It had no games and no ac adapter but other than that it was in perfect shape. Fast forward six months, now I have an ac adapter and most importantly a game. Now I am ready to sit down and spend a little time getting to know my TurboGrafx.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Ninja Gaiden NES FAILED!

So once again I couldn't take Ryu all the way to victory. I did end up making it to the final bosses. I beat the first guy and then got stuffed by the second boss. The worst part of losing is having to go back to the beginning of Stage 6. On the bright side I was forced to fight my way through Stage 6-2 over and over to the point that I don't find it so difficult anymore.

In the end I had a great time playing Ninja Gaiden this weekend and look forward to a rematch sometime very soon. Excellent game. Hard as hell.

Antique Flea Market

Located at the Lake County Fair Grounds Zurko Promotions holds an Antique Flea Market about once a month. I don't usually buy anything from this market but it's always cool to take a look around. I always seem to see some cool things that I hadn't seen or thought about in years.
Mr. T and Hulk Hogan are ready for a little tag team action.
To bad I don't have a land line.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Ninja Gaiden NES

I have never beaten Ninja Gaiden before. In fact I had never even played the game before earlier this year. When I did finally sit down to play it I got my ass handed to me. After dying about a hundred times I was able to make it to passed Stage 6-2. I eventually got tried of being destroyed so I committed Seppuku and shut down the NES vowing to one day to complete my quest to beat Ninja Gaiden.

It's Friday! Time to ninja out and play Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Am I up to the challenge? Do I have what it takes to face an onslaught re-spawning enemies? Maybe.
