Weekend Retro Game Challenge : TMNT 2 The Arcade Game NES

It was a hard fought battle, but my boy and I were able to take down the Foot. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 The Arcade Game is the NES port of the hit Konami arcade game. I have fond memories of playing this game when I was younger and it was fun to revisit with my son.

In order to get through this one I had to pull out the Game Genie for an infinite lives code. Which helps when playing the game with a four year old. It's can be a tough game at certain moments even for me.

Again like all beat'em ups it can get a little repetitive fighting the same baddies over and over, but I didn't feel it as much for this game. From a variety of different foot soldiers and menacing robots there was no shortage of butts to kick.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 The Arcade Game for the NES is one of my favorite games on the console and it is great for a quick play or for a marathon session. Everyone should give it a try if they get the chance.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : TMNT 2 The Arcade Game

This Weekend Retro Game Challenge I'll be taking on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 The Arcade Game, but this time I won't have to face the challenge alone. I'll have my 4 year old son by my side and we are gonna take to fight to the Shredder and the Foot Clan. Cowabunga dudes!

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Batman Returns SNES

Batman Returns for the Super Nintendo is the video game adaptation of the 1992 movie. That is if the movie was a Konami beat'em up. The game touches on all of the key points of the movie through scenes in between the game playIt's like watching an abridged version of the movie with more clown punching.

On my first attempt at beating the game I was unsuccessful. Getting a little more than halfway through before getting spanked by Catwoman. So instead of tucking my tail and quitting I pulled out my secret weapon, the Game Genie, and leveled the playing field. Cheating maybe, but I wanted to finish this one. I mean it's not like I put an invincibility code in, just a couple of enhancements to aid in the struggle. The Game Genie was just the extra bit of strength I needed to finish the game. All in all it only took about an hour to complete.

Game play wise Batman Returns is like most beat'em up and can get a little repetitious at times. Walk around punch the bad guys and fight a couple of bosses. Batman Returns was a fast fun play through and Iwould recommend it to anyone who is a fan of a good old fashioned beat'em up.

The 5 : Cartoons Based on Fighting Games

5. Virtua Fighter

4. Mortal Kombat

3. Darkstalkers

2. Double Dragon

1. Street Fighter

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Batman Returns SNES

With the Dark Knight Rises coming out tomorrow I thought it was only appropriate that this weekend's Retro Game Challenge be a Batman game. So far I don't think I have played any Super Nintendo games for any of my retro challenges, and it just so happens that I have Batman Returns for the SNES.

Konami beat'em up action staring the caped cursader. Let's get ready to rumble.

Video Game Summit 2012

This past Saturday a retro video show was held in Lombard, IL called the Video Game Summit. My son and I got the chance to go down a check it out. We had a great time playing and seeing some really cool things. I got to play the Neo Geo AES for the first time ever and it was awesome. The graphics and game play were absolutely cool, living up to arcade quality. Also, I knew the carts for that system were big, but I guess you don't really have a clue until you are actually holding one in your own hands. I can see why they are still relatively expensive. Hopefully I have a chance one day to pick up an AES for a decent price. After playing one I would like to add the console to my game room. We also got to play a couple of TurboGrafx games which were a lot of fun. Also my son played some tennis on the Virtual Boy.
The Video Game Summit while not being a very large show still had quite a few vendors selling a ton of games. I picked up a couple of things myself. All the vendors I spoke to were very friendly and willing to wheel and deal on their stuff, which is nice when you are trying to find a good deal.

All in all, I thought it was a good time and will for sure go back next year.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Friday The 13Th NES

In the 1980s the Friday The 13Th movie franchise was slicing its way through theaters. There was just something about horny camp counselors getting gutted in the woods that would pack people into theater seats. So obviously trying to capitalize on the series incredible popularity, Friday The 13Th the video game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

This weekend I played Friday The 13Th for the NES for my Retro Game Challenge. I was not able to beat the game. It's not the most complicated game, but lets just say a lot of campers died this weekend because of me. So in the game you play as six camp counselors who have to protect a bunch on campers from Jason Voorhees, a murderous mongoloid hell bent on hunting down any one stupid enough to set foot near Crystal Lake. Each one of the camp counselors have there pluses and minuses when it comes to their skills in the game. Basically you walk around killing zombies and other things that try do you in while finding items to aid you in keeping your head. At first I didn't really know what I was supposed to do in the game but was able to quickly figure it out once the loud beeping sound and the flashing cabin would appear on the map. Go to cabin and save whoever is there, easy enough right. Nope because Jason is waiting to F you up. I would like to think I gave Jason a hard time at least once or twice. For me this game is very repetitive from the music to the actual game play. I guess my favorite part of the game has to be the Jason fights, but other than that I don't see many other reasons to play it again. The box art is really cool though.

The Retro League Podcast

I would like to say thank you to The Retro League Podcast for mentioning my blog on the show this week, episode 138. I enjoy doing this blog and it makes it even cooler to know that someone is actually checking it out.

Each week Rob and Hugues come together to discuss the world of retro video games. From the early days of Atari to the Sega Dreamcast, The Retro League takes a look at what makes the games from yesteryear still relevant in today's modern video gaming world. The hosts are able to describe, what is most definitely a visual median, in a clear and concise way that makes you feel like you have the game right in front of you.

I came across The Retro League Podcast about two years ago when I started to get back into retro video games. I at the time I had just discovered the world of emulation and was looking for ideals of what games to play. I had been playing all the classics that I used to when I was a kid, but I was looking for the things that I had missed out on. I was already listening to podcasts about other things that I liked, so I thought to myself that there has to be others interested in retro gaming out there. A quick search on the Itunes stores and I found the The Retro League Podcast. I would eventually go trough all their available episodes and would look forward to new releases every week.

My favorite part of the podcast has to be when they talk about systems and games I have little to no knowledge of. For instance the TurboGrafx, I had never even heard of this console or seen one before listen to The Retro League. So when I came across one in my In-Laws basement I knew not to leave it behind and to get it to a good home, at my house of course. Also, they have a very active forum community that is an excellent source of information and cool place to chat with others that share similar interests. The forum is  actually where I got my alias of Bad Username from.

The Retro League Podcast is one of my favorite podcasts, and is a must listen for anyone interesting in not just retro video games but modern ones too. So check out The Retro League Podcast, I promise you won't regret it.

And once again thank you Retro League for the shout out.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Friday The 13th NES

I have always loved the Friday The 13TH movies. Ever since I was younger I can remember watching marathons of Friday The 13TH on the USA Network. All day long my siblings and I would watch Jason cut down camp counselors one by one, loving every minute of it.

I remember hearing about a Friday The 13TH video game for the NES, but I never got a chance to check it out back then. Thinking back on that now I wonder why they never made a 16-BIT Friday The 13TH game. I feel they could have made something really cool with the series. I'm sure it probably had something to do with licensing or something.

I found my copy of the Friday The 13TH in a bin of video games sitting in my Mother-In-Law's crawlspace. I played it for a little while that night until Jason hacked me up and haven't touched it since.

Anyways, Jason's favorite day is tomorrow. So I thought it would be appropriate that this Weekend Retro Game Challenge will be Friday The 13TH for the Nintendo Entertainment system.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Spider- Man for the Sega Genesis Failed

Spider-Man has been setup by the Kingpin. Who has planted bombs around the city and blamed it on the Webslinger. Now Spidey has to race against the clock to find the keys to disable the bombs and clear his name. Unfortunately for Spider-Man the Kingpin has hired some nasty villains to stand in the way.

I was almost able to complete this one, but I just ran out of time this weekend. At first I struggled with Spider-Man's clunky controls and the hit detection, but when I started to get hang of them I was web slinging with ease.

I was able to make it to the Central Park stage, but I just couldn't get past the damn Gorilla. I couldn't get close enough to hit him without taking a bunch of damage and had to call it quits after he kicked my ass for the tenth time. Come on, I mean Doc Ock, The Lizard, and Electro were easier to take down than the F-ing Gorilla.  Also it would have been nicer to have more of a variety of enemies in the stages. It got really monotonous beating down the same jamocs again and again.

Spider-Man for the Sega Genesis isn't the worst game out there, but it's also not gonna be on any best of list. Beating this game is diffidently obtainable but just not this weekend.

Awesome Videos : Mega Man 2 Soundtrack Played Live

Picked up Mega Man 2 on the IOS last week. Been playing the hell out of it and it got me thinking about how great the soundtrack is. After a google search I found this video, check out the awesome.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Spider- Man for the Sega Genesis

I saw the new Spider-Man movie this week, which was amazing, and while watching Spidey web sling across New York it got me thinking if I had any Spider-Man games. So I went to my game room to investigate and there it was Spider-Man for the Sega Genesis. So in honor of the new movie I thought it was time for me to help the wall crawler clean up the city for this weekend's challenge.

Weekend Retro Game Challenge : Strider for Sega Genesis FAILED!

Another check goes into the FAILED column for this Weekend Retro Game Challenge of Strider for the Sega Genesis. I just couldn't get into this game. Even after playing for a couple of hours I never found myself compelled to keep on going.

Strider is the story of Hiryu, who is the youngest man to reach the rank of an A-classed Strider, one of the last defenders of Earth. An alien force from a distant nebula has come to conquer the Earth and enslave it's people. The mastermind behind this evil plot is Meio who plans to rule the Earth from a space station called Third Moon. Strider must fight his way through five different stages and defeat Meio if the Earth is to have a future.

So whats my problem with Strider? To be honest I don't know. On paper this game should be one of my go to games. Maybe I didn't give it enough time. I'll have to come back to this one someday.
