It Came From Craigslist

______________________________________________________________________

Found an Ad on Craigslist for a Sega Saturn that I just couldn't pass up. I have been looking for one ever since the Midwest Gaming Classic where I got to play one for the first time.  I don't recall the game I played, only that it was a shoot em' up and that it was awesome. Growing up I was diffidently a Playstation guy so I never really  payed much attention to the Saturn. All I can remember about the console is going into the game store in the mall and noticing the long Saturn game boxes lined up on the shelves. Not sure why that memory sticks out in my head. Weird.

Looking forward to logging some quality time with this new edition to my game room, but before that can happen I need to find some games for it.  Which may be harder than it sounds because so far in my travels I haven't come across any Saturn games. So let the hunting begin.

Reader Question:
What games should I be looking for on the Sega Saturn? Let me know.

The Night I Took Castlevania Down

It was a darker than black fall night with a chill in the air that you could  feel deep in your bones. I sat in my dimly lit game room battling the minions of an ancient evil in Castlevania for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Each and every ghoul I took down sharpened my whipping skills into a divine like perfection that I would eventually need to win the night. I marched stage by stage until I finally made it to the dark one himself, Dracula. It was a hard fought battle that required all my cunning and strength, but in the end I was able to come out on top. Dracula was defeated just as a new day dawned, and I could now say that I have beaten Castlevania.

I set a goal to beat Castlevania earlier this month in honor of the Halloween season. It feels great knowing that I was able to complete the challenge. Like I said before in a previous post, Castlevania was one of the games I had missed out on growing up. I never played a game in the franchise until a couple of weeks back when I started my run at the original. I'm looking forward to seeing what the other games bring to the table because I had a blast playing this one. I've heard the second game is bad because of the changes to some of the play mechanics, but I have always liked to keep an open mind about things until I have experienced them for myself.

Retro Finds

Hey retro dudes and dudettes. This weekend I checked out a couple of new places in my area that I heard may sell retro games. The places ended up having a ton of retro stuff. One place even had a nice import section. Unfortunately most of the merch was way over priced. Even with the prices being a little out of line I was still able to find a few things that were more in my price range to add to my collection.

Sub Terrania

Ninja Gaiden 2 (damanged label but I'll fix that) and Bubble Bobble

Not a perfect label reproduction but at least I can read it now.
Robocop Vs. Terminator and Wrestle Mania

Now for what I'm not sure is a nice find or not, a TRS-80 color in the box with a couple of games. I am not really into the older computer gaming stuff especially something as old as the TRS-80, but for whatever reason I decided to grab it.

The box says it all

Bustout, Space Assault, Chess.

Maybe I'll learn some Basic...

Weekend Retro Game Play : Castlevania

It's October my favorite time of the year. The leaves are changing colors, temperatures are dropping and Halloween is right around the corner. So what better way to get into Halloween spirit than to breakout the horror themed games and give them a play through. So when trying to pick one out I decided on a game that I missed out on back in the day, Castlevania. Holy shit do I like this game. I had a good first run through and got as far as the Grim Reaper before I got stuck. It may take some time but I want to beat this game. So I'll probably be working at it for awhile.

Arcade Action : Galloping Ghost Arcade

Today I made a trip down to an awesome arcade in Brookfield, IL called Galloping Ghost. Only $15 at the door gains you access to a ton arcade machines all set to free play. I spent over two hours there and only played a fraction of the machines they have. While I was there I tried to play as many classics as possible; Donkey Kong, Galaga, Missile Command, Centipede, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man. It was awesome to play these games on their actual machines, especially Asteroids. I was terrible at most of them but nevertheless I still had a blast. Another excellent part of my trip was checking out games that I had only played on MAME before like Aliens Vs. Predators and Battletoads, which are both fun as hell. Like I said there were so many games.

Over all this is the best arcade that I have ever been to and the best part is that you don't even need to smash your piggy bank to get a ton of playtime. If you are ever in the Brookfield area I would definitely swing by Galloping Ghost.
